What I actually look for in a family

Hi Reader,

Most of what I write in these emails is about the puppies. What they're like, how we raise them, what makes each one distinctive. But there's another side of my work that I don't talk about as much, and it's just as important. What I'm looking for on your side of the match.

Families ask me all the time what makes someone a good fit for a Divine Pup, and the honest answer surprises them. It has nothing to do with income or house size or whether you have a fenced yard. It has almost nothing to do with what people usually think.

Here's what I've come to look for, after years of watching which families thrive with our puppies.

I look for families who understand they aren't shopping for a perfect puppy. Every puppy comes with a temperament, and that temperament is who they are. Some are quiet and observant, some are playful and bold, some are deeply sensitive, some are steady and unbothered by almost anything. None of them are perfect. All of them are exactly who they were meant to be, and the families who thrive are the ones who arrive ready to love the puppy in front of them, not the imagined puppy they built up in their head.

I look for families who understand what temperament testing actually is. It isn't a measurement of quality. It's a translation of who this puppy already is, so we can match them into a home where their nature will be celebrated instead of managed. Families who see the value in that work usually treat their puppy differently once they arrive home, because they're not trying to reshape a personality into what they wanted. They're partnering with the one they were given.

I look for families who will honor their puppy's voice. That phrase means something specific to me. Every puppy is telling you something, all the time, in the way they orient toward or away from things, in the way they seek connection or take space, in the way they handle stress or joy. Families who slow down enough to hear that voice, and who let it shape how they raise their dog, end up with the deepest bonds. Families who try to override it usually end up frustrated, and so does the dog.

I look for families who want a breeder in their corner for the long haul, not just a transaction at week nine. The families I love working with come back with questions when their puppy is six months old and going through a phase. They send photos at the one-year mark. They tell me when something feels off, and they trust me enough to hear the answer. That relationship is what I signed up for when I started this program, and it's what I want with every family who takes a Divine Pup home.

I look for families who see beyond the cute puppy in front of them. Every one of these dogs will grow up. They'll get older, quieter, greyer in the muzzle. They'll go through hard seasons, health scares, and eventually the long goodbye. The families who thrive are the ones who understand from day one that they're not choosing a puppy for a season. They're choosing a companion for a life.

None of this means my families all look the same. Some are young couples, some are grandparents with time and love to give. Some have big loud households full of kids, others are single people who want quiet company. Some have never had a dog before, others have raised many. I've placed pups into all of those homes and watched them thrive in each one, because the qualities I look for don't live in a specific lifestyle. They live in a mindset.

This program was never about finding perfect families or perfect puppies. It's about connection. The kind that starts before you ever hold your puppy for the first time, and continues long after that puppy grows into a dog and eventually into a companion who has been there through your whole story.

If any of this sounds like your family, I'd love to meet you.
