What Dogs Understand About Us Without Words

Reader,

There’s something I’ve noticed about dogs over the years that still fascinates me.

They understand us in ways that don’t involve words at all.

You can see it in the small moments.

A dog quietly sitting beside someone who’s having a hard day.
A puppy suddenly becoming still when a person’s voice changes.
The way they look at you when they know something in your world feels different.

No commands.
No training cues.

Just awareness.

I’ve seen it happen with puppies long before they go home to their families.

Sometimes I’ll be sitting on the floor with them, talking with someone visiting. If the conversation gets serious, the puppies often stop what they’re doing and come closer.

Not because anyone called them.

Because dogs pay attention to energy.

It’s something people don’t always realize about companion breeds like Shih Tzus. For centuries, they were bred for one very specific purpose: to stay close to people. Not to herd. Not to hunt. Not to guard livestock.

To notice us.

To be near us.

Over time, that closeness created a kind of sensitivity. Dogs begin to read tone, posture, mood shifts — things we don’t even realize we’re expressing.

And when they sense those changes, they respond in the only way they know how.

They sit near you.
They follow you.
They quietly stay beside you.

No big gestures.

Just presence.

I think that’s part of why people describe their dogs as their best friends.

Not because dogs fix problems.

But because they notice them.

And sometimes the simple act of being noticed — even by a little dog with soft ears and curious eyes — can make the whole day feel lighter.

When I watch the puppies here, I’m always thinking about that future.

Who will this puppy sit beside one day?

Who will they follow from room to room?

Who will they comfort without anyone asking them to?

Because these puppies don’t just grow into pets.

They grow into companions for someone’s life.

And that’s something I never take lightly.

Xo,

Ara
